Aussie of the Month Awards

The Aussie of the Month Award is a West Australian school based award program encouraging Australian pride and spirit amongst primary school children. There are currently over 400 schools across the State participating in the program. Like all of our awards the Aussie of the Month award recognises personal endeavour, achievement and contribution to the community. The awards also reflect some of the values we share as Australians, a sense of fair play, generosity of spirit, commitment to community, participation and a real concern for the environment.

An outstanding young Aussie

  Kayleb Perkins

Year 2,  East Hamersley Primary School

Thank you to Sandra Long of East Hamersley Primary School for providing us with this fantastic article about Aussie of the Month recipient - Kayleb Perkins.

Kayleb is from Year Two at East Hamersley Primary School and recently displayed a number of wonderful virtues which resulted in him being named Aussie of the Month.

Kayleb displayed Care, Compassion, Confidence, Courage, Love, Reliability and

Trustworthiness and because of his quick actions, avoided a near tragedy occurring within his family.  At the school’s last assembly Kayleb was presented with a special certificate of bravery and also received the ‘Aussie of the Month’ certificate and pin.

Below is the letter received from Kayleb’s parents detailing his brave actions.

“Yesterday at home while I was sitting on the floor with my baby brother, something very scary happened.  When my brother rolled over his tracheotomy came out but I didn’t know. He started making funny noises so I called my daddy and sat down to check Kassidi again. He sounded like he was choking. I started to get very scared!! I yelled again and my mum and dad raced in, they rolled him over and he was going blue.  I raced to get the oxygen and bag and mask, while my mum and dad helped my brother.  After it was all over my mum and my dad told me I was so brave and because I stayed with him and yelled loudly, I saved him!!  They are both very proud of me and I am very proud of me too.”

Congratulations Kayleb – you were extremely brave and caring. All of us at the Australia Day Council of WA are very proud of you too!

Many schools have successfully integrated the Aussie of the Month program into their civics and citizenship curriculum, by using the award to generate discussion on community participation and involvement.

Each month a student is chosen as the Aussie of the Month and the recipient is presented with the Aussie of the Month badge and certificate at a school assembly. The certificate and badge is kept by recipients as a memento of the occasion .

Each year new certificates are provided to schools which incorporate a photograph and message from the new Young Australian of the Year. In line with the philosophy of the ‘Aussie’ program we hope the inclusion of the outstanding Young Australian each year serves to inspire students to strive for excellence in all their endeavours. Visit our Australian of the Year Awards page for further information about inspiring Australians.
